Mike Rowe
Motivational, Celebrity Speaker
Host of Discovery Channel's Hit Show "Dirty Jobs"
How many of us get the opportunity to clean up toxic bird poop, dive
for golf balls in alligator-infested waters or assist in the artificial
insemination of a horse? Of course, how many of us would want to? To
Mike Rowe, host of the Discovery Channel series Dirty Jobs, those jobs
(and more) are all part of an honest day's work. By serving as an
apprentice to everyday men and women who perform the jobs no one else
wants, Mike has found a hands-on way to pay tribute to a nation of
unsung heroes, and get more than a few laughs along the way.
He has been on all of the morning and evening talk shows, he was given an entire hour on the Larry King show, and now is Ford's on screen spokesperson in all commercials for their number one product, the Ford F-150.
As a keynote speaker Mike further
pays tribute to the working men and women of today. He discusses the
value of using your own hands in life, being more self-sufficient and
therfore productive. Stepping out of that easy chair to fix things
yourself, or to actually build something. He will inspire audiences to
stand up and be proud to do the jobs that other people wont do... The
behind the scenes jobs that make everyone elses life more comfortable
and easy.
Every week Mike travels to and
participates in, as the title suggests, a “dirty job”. But as anyone
who has seen the show can tell you, not only are many of the jobs
physically dirty, they are also disgusting. The “eweee” factor is quite
high. One week Mike might be scrubbing bird poop from marine buoys
(which as we are learning from the Minneapolis bridge collapse is an
important maintenance task) and the next he might be cleaning out the
sewers of Manhattan and discovering all of the “treasures” found there.
Since the show began, Mike has tried over 150 dirty and disgusting
jobs.
But along the way of creating a
show with a cringe factor, something else happened. Something that has
made Mike Rowe not only a TV celebrity but now a world-class
motivational speaker who has spoken to the employees and management of
companies like Motorola and CBS and who, in speaking, has followed the
likes of Colin Powell.
What Mike Rowe found is that in
doing these “dirty jobs” one had to work beside and learn from those
who do these jobs not just once for a TV show but who do them every day
of their lives. What Mike Rowe and all the viewers found were very
happy and fulfilled and optimistic people who did these jobs.
When Mike began to notice this, he started to ask questions to ascertain why these people with some of the most disgusting jobs were so dog gone happy. And this is what he found: The people who do these dirty jobs have a sense of personal gratification. They see with their own eyes that they have made a contribution to society. They take great pride in what they do because they know, they are convinced, that what they do is important, is vital to the whole. They know that if you remove them from the chain, then the whole structure falls in on itself. They see themselves as not “optional” but “necessary”. And their happiness and sense of contentment spills over to their other relationships in life, they are happy and fulfilled family members, they are kind and generous neighbors. This is the finding that has made the show popular and has made Mike Rowe a celebrity and an in demand speaker.

Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman
Hosts of Discovery Channel's hit show "Mythbusters"
It's a tough job separating truth from urban legend, but the MythBusters are here to serve. Each week on the Discovery Channel, special-effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman take on three myths and use modern-day science to show you what's real and what's fiction.
Savage and Hyneman do more than explain how something may or may not be scientifically possible. Through trial and error, they actually demonstrate it.
Adam Savage's fascination with creating things started when he began building his own toys at age 5, and he hasn't stopped since. He's served as an animator, graphic designer, stage and interior designer, carpenter, welder and scenic painter, and he's worked in everything from metal to glass, plastics to injection molding, and pneumatics to animatronics. For the past eight years, Adam has concentrated on the special-effects industry, honing his skills through more than 100 television commercials and 12 feature films, including Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace and Episode II: Attack of the Clones, Galaxy Quest, Terminator 3, A.I. and the Matrix sequels. He's also designed props and sets for Coca-Cola, Hershey's, Lexus and a host of New York and San Francisco theater companies.
And now, in addition to co-hosting Discovery Channel's MythBusters, Adam Savage also teaches advanced model making, most recently in the industrial design department at the San Francisco Academy of Art. And somehow, he also finds time to devote to his own art - his sculptures have been showcased in over 40 shows in San Francisco, New York and Charleston, W.V.
Hailing from Indiana farm country, Jamie Hyneman, like his co-host, is also a multifaceted man: he's a wilderness survival expert, a boat captain, a diver, a linguist, an animal wrangler, a machinist and a chef, to name a few. Hyneman's career has been equally diverse: he earned a degree in Russian languages and literature and ran a sailing/diving charter business in the Caribbean for several years before he moved over to the visual-effects industry.

Jim Wight, son of James Herriot
Author of The Real James Herriot, the famous veterinarian
James Alfred Wight, known the world over as James Herriot, the world’s most famous veterinarian and author, continues to be incredibly popular years after his death. While parts of his life were shared with his fans through his books and the television series All Creatures Great & Small, Alf Wight remained a very private man.
Recently his son, Jim Wight, a veterinarian who worked alongside his father in their Yorkshire animal hospital for more than 20 years, shared considerable information about him when he wrote the authorized biography The Real James Herriot.
No one is better poised to write the biography of James Herriot than the son who worked alongside him in the Yorkshire veterinary practice when Herriot became an internationally bestselling author. Now, in this warm and poignant biography, Jim Wight ventures beyond his father's life as a veterinarian to reveal the man behind the stories--the private individual who refused to allow fame and wealth to interfere with his practice or his family.
With access to all of his father's papers, correspondence, manuscripts, and photographs--and intimate recollections of the farmers, locals, and friends who populate the James Herriot books--only Jim Wight could write this definitive biography of the man who was not only his father but his best friend.
The careers of Jim Wight and his father, Alf Wight (aka James Herriot) are similar in many ways. Both men qualified from the Glasgow Veterinary College, both worked at the practice of Sinclair and Wight in Thirsk, England (Skeldale House in Herriot’s books) and both wrote their first books when they were in their 50s - Alf at the age of 53 and Jim at 56.
All too often the phrase "a must read" is thrown around by people who review books. The Real James Herriot is a very good biography about a very interesting man - and certainly "a must read" for Herriot fans.
